What Is Adult Strabismus?
Strabismus is the medical term for misaligned eyes. While most cases occur in children, a large number of adults are also affected. Unfortunately, some adults are told that nothing can be done or that it is too late for treatment. This is not true, surgical and non-surgical treatments are available for adults as well. Ophthalmologists like Dr. Bianchi regularly care for adults with strabismus.
Causes of Adult Strabismus
Adults develop strabismus for different reasons than children. It is often caused by medical or neurological conditions such as diabetes, thyroid disease, myasthenia gravis, major head trauma, stroke, or brain tumors. In rare cases, strabismus may result from damage to the eye muscles following surgeries like cataract or retinal surgery, or from untreated childhood strabismus.
Symptoms and Impact
Strabismus in adults often leads to double vision, which can be very disruptive. Even without double vision, misalignment can make it difficult to maintain eye contact, making social situations uncomfortable. Studies show that strabismus may impact employment and social opportunities. The good news is that surgery and other treatments can often improve or restore normal alignment.
